LIMITED RELEASE: Sumatra Bahtera
Limited Release
This coffee wasn’t supposed to be here. A box of green coffee showed up at our door that wasn’t what we ordered, and instead of sending it back, we roasted it. About [X] bags exist, each labeled by hand, and we don’t have plans to bring it back.
The Farm & Community
Grown in the Bener Meriah district of Aceh Province, Sumatra, by the Bahtera Cooperative. Founded in 2018, Bahtera works with more than 2,000 smallholder farmers across 20 villages, including many women producers, growing Gayo Arabica in Sumatra’s highlands.
The Process
This lot is processed using Giling Basah, Indonesia’s traditional wet-hulling method. The parchment is removed while the beans are still relatively moist, before final drying. It’s a process found almost nowhere outside Indonesia, and a big part of why Sumatran coffees taste the way they do.
Impact
This lot came to us unplanned, so we haven’t yet confirmed the pricing details paid to producers. We’re asking our sourcing partner and will share specifics once we have them.
In the cup: bittersweet chocolate, crème brûlée, vanilla, molasses, and a hint of sweet tobacco.
Roast: Medium-dark
Elevation: 1,100–1,500 MASL
Process: Wet-hulled (Giling Basah)
Cultivar: Gayo 1, Gayo 2, Gayo 3
Harvest: May 2026
Whole Bean Coffee
12oz | 340g (Approximately 22 cups of coffee)
Special Note: We highly recommend the use of a grinder to experience the freshest and most flavorful coffee. Once coffee is ground, it rapidly loses it’s flavor and complexity. Reach out if you would like guidance on finding a grinder for your home!
